Mandarin Courses

International Undergraduate Program (IUP) Course (The IUP program will conclude by Spring 2024)

1. Who can attend?

This optional course is open to international undergraduate degree students seeking to learn Mandarin, with credits that count towards graduation (The four-semester IUP course is worth 24 credits and can be counted as credits for the General Education Courses). IUP courses are not available to students from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

2. How to enroll?

Complete the IUP application and attached questionnaire prior to the application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. IUP course applications are only accepted for fall semester.

Once your application is submitted, OIC staff will arrange for course enrollment on your behalf. If you change your mind, you can drop the course during phase 3 (online add/drop) and phase 4 (manual add/drop).

Students who fail the IUP fall semester will not be allowed to continue in the spring semester. However, students who fail the IUP course in the spring semester may elect to retake the course the following fall

3. When to attend?

The IUP Course meets on Mondays (16:00-19:00) and Thursdays (16:00-19:00).

4. What  I learn?

The course covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. During the semester, teachers will lead students in participating in cultural events to familiarize you with the unique beauty of Taiwan! Courses are conducted in 6 different levels of difficulty, and individual students are assigned to an appropriate level based on a placement examination.

5. How will my Chinese proficiency be determined?

The OIC will email you a link and login information to take an online placement test that tests Chinese listening & reading. This is followed by an in-person speaking test. Based on the results of these two tests, you will be assigned to a suitable level.

Returning students do not need to take the test, but will be assigned to the next level in the following semester.

6. How are credits awarded?

The four-semester IUP course is worth 24 credits (6 credits per semester, 4 semesters in total). Upon course completion, these credits will be transferred as "General Education Course" credits by the Office of Academic Affairs. For students who do not complete the course, these credits will not count towards graduation, and such students will still need to take at least 4 general education credits to meet graduation requirements.

Teachers take attendance in every class session, and attendance counts towards final grades. Missing 20 minutes of an individual class session is counted as a one-hour absence, and 40 such absences will result in a failing grade. If you must miss class due to illness or accident, submit an official Certificate of Diagnosis from a public hospital to your teacher.
